MSDE Honors Principals, teachers for Service-Learning leadership
Baltimore (May 28, 2003) - State Superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick honored seven principals and 13 Maryland teachers today who have exhibited outstanding leadership for their service-learning programs. The seven principals included Service-Learning Principal of the Year Jack Wilson of Pine Grove Middle School in Baltimore County. His award includes $1000 to be used to support service-learning in his school. Honorable Mention principals will each receive an award plus $200 for their schools. They include:

In addition to the principals, thirteen outstanding teachers were inducted into Maryland's statewide Service-Learning Fellows Program. Each of these educators has succeeded in providing K-12 public school students interesting, inspiring, and academically challenging service-learning experiences. These experiences include protecting the Chesapeake Bay by engaging in tree plantings to create buffer zones, working with senior citizens, developing Veterans and Memorial Day programs to honor local heroes, and supporting the Special Olympics. The teachers each received a $300 award, a commemorative plaque, as well as on-going leadership training and development opportunities. The list includes:

There are now 144 Fellows in Maryland's 24 school districts who are able to share their expertise by training other teachers in service-learning, mentoring, working with local service-learning teams, and writing curriculum.
