On-Site Service-Learning Projects

Student participants will get a first-hand opportunity to recognize the tremendous impact their service makes on the community by pre-registering for service-learning projects. Each service-learning project takes place during a combined first and second session (running from 10:10 - 12:20). Participants must be present for the entire two-hours. Please do not register for a service project if you cannot fully participate. Please note that we can only accommodate 15% of our Conference participants in service projects so we ask you to pro-rate your groups' registrations accordingly. We will accept registrations on a first come, first served basis. This year's service projects are:

  • Option A: "Read* Write* Now" In this project, you will become familiar with the national Read* Write* Now Campaign as you help children develop a love of reading. You will learn how to model good reading techniques before reading with and/or to a pre-school child. You will also share information to promote literacy in the child's home further.

  • Option B: "Surfing with Seniors" Spend some time in Cyberspace sharing your computer skills with a senior citizen. You will work with an elderly partner who has expressed interest in developing computer & Internet skills. In reflection, you will explore the possibility of continuing an e-lationship with your partner. (Participants must have Internet knowledge and experience.)

  • Option C: "Build Your Own Raingarden!" When rainwater hits the land, it flows to the nearest waterway - often off streets, parking lots, and rooftops. The water picks up dirt, nutrients, and other pollutants along the way that can decrease stream health. Learn how to slow and decrease the amount of water runoff from your schoolyard by building a rain garden that improves water quality using native plants to help soak-up excess water. Raingardens can take just about any shape and are easy enough for students to build with minimal adult supervision. (Participants should dress according to the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire session.)
