Maryland's 11th Annual Service-Learning Conference

What is the Solid Waste Reduction Initiative?

This year, conference attendees and other Maryland students are encouraged to participate in a statewide service-learning project. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and MSSA are proud to help you launch your Solid Waste Reduction Initiative. We are very excited about this year's project, as students will be able to participate in various activities to see how their actions directly impact their environment and that they can take positive steps to create a healthier environment. The Solid Waste Reduction Overview, Project Guide, Guiding Questions and Activities, and supporting materials on Chesapeake Bay Foundation website, www.bayschools.org/educators/curriculum, can help you kick off this project.

Students are encouraged to share materials at the Conference that showcase the actions they took to reduce solid waste. Posters and slides that reflect the amount of trash generated both before and after their efforts, mobiles or other artwork created from recycled or reused materials, and photographs or videos showing students engaged in various solid waste reduction efforts are welcome. You are encouraged to submit materials for exhibit at the conference prior to the conference date. Your digital entries and videos may be included in a huge mass media presentation if you submit them by February 13th to the Maryland Student Service Alliance. (Contact tseabolt@msde.state.md.us. or 410-767-0365/800-489-8355 for more information.) You are encouraged to submit other visual representations in advance of the conference but, if you prefer to bring them with you, please provide MSSA with details about your exhibit by March 1st. You may also enter black and white photographs of students involved in related activities for the statewide Photo Exhibit, which will be featured at the conference. Even if you are not attending the conference, we encourage you to share a visual account of your activities.
